Vaginal rejuvenation is a broad term that covers several vaginal corrective procedures. These procedures are meant to correct problems that can occur after giving birth or during the aging process. Conditions can include laxity (lack of tightness) of the vagina, stress urinary incontinence, and lack of lubrication. Most often, the women who seek this treatment are postmenopausal and/or postpartum women. Dr. Wetherington recommends that patients with these issues discuss them with her gynecologist.
At Horizons Plastic Surgery, Dr. Wetherington focusses his cosmetic skills on the surgical correction of the external appearance of the vaginal tissues. Adult women, of all ages, may feel self-conscious about the size and/or shape of their labia. Bathing suits and undergarments may reveal this bothersome excess of tissue; the elongated labia may interfere with sexual satisfaction. Dr. Wetherington’s surgical procedures include labiaplasty, which is the surgical reduction in the size of the labia minora with improved symmetry, clitoral hood reduction and monsplasty.
In labiaplasty, precise measurements are used to design incisions that not only makes the labia minora smaller, but also takes into account the variations in color of the various parts of the labia; scars become almost invisible.
Occasionally, when the labia minora are surgically reduced, extra folds of soft tissue can create a small bulge in the clitoral hood. This unflattering feature is corrected with a clitoral hood reduction which further improves the balance in appearance of the female genitalia.
Monsplasty is frequently incorporated into the surgical plan during abdominoplasty. Excess fat is removed from upper pubic area. The adjacent fascia is lifted (similar to the technique of facelifting) and sutured to the lower abdominal fascia. This elevates the otherwise droopy pubis into a more pleasing position.
