The popularity of injectables for rejuvenating the face is so great that it sometimes looks like the world might be taking it too lightly. Although made of the same substance (hyaluronic acid), all of the HA fillers have individually unique qualities that can best be appreciated by an experienced injector. Particle size, viscosity, G-prime and a host of rheological metrics are used to classify each of these products.  Some will perform better in certain circumstances than others will.

At Horizons Plastic Surgery, Dr. Wetherington performs all of the injections and uses his extensive experience to recommend which of the numerous HA fillers will work best for the patient’s needs. For example, lip enhancement, cheek bone enhancement and tear-trough injections each vary significantly in ‘technique’, as well as which HA fillers work the best.

Basic Approaches and a Host of Possibilities

The two main, non-surgical ways to decrease wrinkles are by relaxing the muscles beneath the skin (Botox/Dysport) and/or by adding soft tissue volume (fillers) to areas of deficiency.

Botox and Dysport are legendary for the ‘relax-the-muscles’ approach, being among the most widely accepted injectables, particularly for erasing forehead wrinkles and frown lines. The results are noticeable within 72 to 96 hours and, in most cases, the results last three to four months.

In the United States, the two most popular brands of HA fillers are Restylane and Juvéderm. Both of them are safe and effective when utilized properly. Made of hyaluronic acid, a water-soluble substance already present in our skin, these fillers help add some additional volume where it is beneficial. These materials attract water and thus achieve their full effect after the first thirty days after injection.
